Judging the Quality of Discount Bedroom Furniture

You spend about a third of your life in bed, so you want your bedroom furniture to be built to last. But sometimes, buying discount bedroom furniture can feel like you are sacrificing quality for a lower price. Luckily, this doesn’t have to be the case. You can find quality discount bedroom furniture, and if you know how to judge it before you buy it you have a better chance of getting a piece that will not only save you money, but last you a long time.

Many discount stores have jumped on the discount furniture bandwagon, and this can be a good thing…but you do need to be wary of the quality. Don’t go by the name of the designer when selecting a piece. You want to be sure the craftsmanship is sound.

One of the problems that has been discovered with discount store furniture, such as pieces from Target, Kmart and Walmart, is that the furniture is bolted together but not glued as well. When furniture is not glued together as well as bolted, they will eventually start to wiggle and loosen the bolts.

You also want to know what materials the furniture is made of. Often, discount bedroom furniture is made of particle board and then covered with a veneer that looks like another wood, such as oak, birch or mahogany. Check the tag to see what materials are listed on it. While there is nothing wrong with particle board, it should be priced far lower than furniture made from solid wood. If the materials are not listed, then it is probably better to buy somewhere else.

One thing you can do to get discount bedroom furniture is to look for wood pieces that are unfinished. These will be  well made, but much cheaper than finished furniture, and this way you can stain it or paint it to any finish or color you like. It is a little more work, but you will end up with a good value and a piece that is customized the way you really want it.

Another way to find good discount bedroom furniture is to look for respected brand names that you know are good quality. You can buy it used, or from places that sell discontinued lines or overstock from previous design seasons. Online auctions can be a good place to find brand name pieces, but the shipping can be expensive depending on where you live. Stores such as Winners often stock designer furniture that either has a small defect, or is no longer being sold in large retail chains and you can get really amazing deals if you keep your eyes open and check back often for new stock.

Discount bedroom furniture doesn’t have to mean low quality. When you know what you’re looking for, you can score a great deal on a quality piece that will last you a long time.
